Lunch @ #4 at Lake Windemere

When you’re driving up the M6 or down the M74 with no real time constraints, it would be rude not to swing past the Lake District, wouldn’t it? We hadn’t eaten anything since leaving Liverpool and by the time we arrived in the district we were pretty hungry. Bowness-on-Windemere is a gorgeous little town with loads of little shops and flowers everywhere.

We took a wander around the lake and the town (and the gift shop of the Beatrix Potter World…I could have bought so much stuff for my imaginary future children). We decided not to take the Peter Rabbit tour or take part in the story time slot, in favour of stopping at #4 for a spot of lunch!

When I walked in the door to the smell of coffee and the sound of John Mayer on the speakers, I knew I was where I was meant to be.

They also stock Fentiman’s which is a winner. They don’t have my Rose Lemonade, but I can forgive that for now! We decided to go for some salads as they sounded so tasty!

Mackerel Salad

This was absolutely to die for – an artistically licensed version of a salad where the lettuce leaves have been replaced with boiled new potatoes which were cooled and tossed with chopped spring onion, tomatoes, celery and red onions. The mackerel was served warm on top with some fresh lemon. It was delicious – the mackerel was so deep in flavour that the entire dish was just gorgeous!

Mediterranean Pasta

Fusilli tossed in a light tomato and basil sauce with black olives, sun-dried tomatoes and chives, and then garnished with peppery rocket. Perfect summer food.

Prawn & Smoked Salmon Salad

This was a basic prawn Marie Rose and smoked salmon salad – it just hit the spot though! Sometimes the creativity can be lost on you when you’re really hungry, so this was comfortable, fresh, filling and super tasty! We hadn’t eaten all day so two of us shared the three dishes and left #4 completely and utterly stuffed! As we were eating the owner’s dog was longingly gazing at us. I don’t blame him.

Geez a bit.
