My friends and I have had a fairly rough time of it recently and a lot has changed (for the better, I might add). We decided to go out for a nice meal and some drinks to mark what we’re calling ‘The new chapter’ – and I don’t care how twee that sounds. It’s nice, okay?
We poured our glass of fizz, sorted our make up and toasted to the good life. Actually, looking back, since that night we have started all our weekends with a glass of fizz whilst we do our make up. How grand!
I am a sucker for goats cheese, and every time I buy or make a salad containing it my brain says “OMG THIS IS THE BEST EVER”. I can’t say for certain that this one actually is in fact the best ever, but I felt that way while eating it!
In terms of presentation, this is how to do it! So many restaurants these days are being clever, I’ll grant them that, by trying too hard to be stylish. Serving this dish in an actual cocktail glass isn’t the way to go because you compromise the portion size as well it making it a holy nightmare to eat. I have tipped my prawn cocktail out onto the plate before as the cocktail glass felt like it was going to tip! 29 have it spot on – a gorgeously rich prawn cocktail, decent portion and it’s conveniently served!
My steak was cooked medium as per my order and I asked for béarnaise sauce with it. The steak was beautiful but in comparison to other steaks in Glasgow I felt that it wasn’t particularly juicy and the flavour was slightly lacking. It was a lovely steak, don’t get me wrong, but I had been told I had to try this place so I maybe built it up a little too much.
The sides in 29 are what I’d describe as ‘real man’ food. They’re chunky, big portions and presentation isn’t key with them, and I don’t mean that as an insult, but if you look at the pictures you’ll see that they aren’t delicate little dishes like you’d see in other restaurants. You definitely get value for money here.
I took a bit of everything and tucked it. It was a fantastic feed. I would definitely recommend coming here but I’m torn in some ways. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous – very romantic in fact. But the steaks are almost verging towards casual pub steaks in my opinion – it’ll sound odd to some that I like the food to match the venue, especially when it’s a classy romantic place like 29. When I go back I would probably go for the main menu rather than a steak, just to see what it’s like. 29 is a gorgeous venue, the staff were wonderful and I am very impressed with the food.
